WickhamsaffectionforLydiawasjustwhatElizabethhadexpectedtofindit;notequaltoLydiasforhim。Shehadscarcelyneededherpresentobservationtobesatisfied,fromthereasonofthings,thattheirelopementhadbeenbroughtonbythestrengthofherlove,ratherthanbyhis;andshewouldhavewonderedwhy,withoutviolentlycaringforher,hechosetoelopewithheratall,hadshenotfeltcertainthathisflightwasrenderednecessarybydistressofcircumstances;andifthatwerethecase,hewasnottheyoungmantoresistanopportunityofhavingacompanion。
Lydiawasexceedinglyfondofhim。HewasherdearWickhamoneveryoccasion;noonewastobeputincompetitionwithhim。Hedideverythingbestintheworld;andshewassurehewouldkillmorebirdsonthefirstofSeptember,thananybodyelseinthecountry。
