ThelittleGardiners,attractedbythesightofachaise,werestandingonthestepsofthehouseastheyenteredthepaddock;and,whenthecarriagedroveuptothedoor,thejoyfulsurprisethatlighteduptheirfaces,anddisplayeditselfovertheirwholebodies,inavarietyofcapersandfrisks,wasthefirstpleasingearnestoftheirwelcome。

Hersister,however,assuredherofherbeingperfectlywell;andtheirconversation,whichhadbeenpassingwhileMr。andMrs。Gardinerwereengagedwiththeirchildren,wasnowputanendtobytheapproachofthewholeparty。Janerantoheruncleandaunt,andwelcomedandthankedthemboth,withalternatesmilesandtears。
Whentheywereallinthedrawing-room,thequestionswhichElizabethhadalreadyaskedwereofcourserepeatedbytheothers,andtheysoonfoundthatJanehadnointelligencetogive。Thesanguinehopeofgood,however,whichthebenevolenceofherheartsuggestedhadnotyetdesertedher;shestillexpectedthatitwouldallendwell,andthateverymorningwouldbringsomeletter,eitherfromLydiaorherfather,toexplaintheirproceedings,and,perhaps,announcetheirmarriage。
